Embracing a New Body, a New Me

It’s been three years since I decided to give the weight loss journey one more try. In March it will be three years since my point of no return. After so much time has passed I’m still adjusting to my new body.

My closet still has a section of dress clothes that were once tight-fitting, but now hang on me like oversized pajamas. While I was gifted some clothes to fit my new body, I continue to cope with the reality that I am at least 50 pounds lighter than three years ago.

As I continue to adjust to the new me, I also struggle with the anxiety from an occasional weight gain. During the recent holiday, my weight fluctuated by 5-6 pounds. It felt as if I were struggling with 15-20 pound weight gain.

At times I’ve battled symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder, a mental health condition related to body image. While I was and continue to be much lighter, healthier, the mental struggles are real. It is rare that I enjoy a hearty meal without overanalyzing the impact on my abs or chest in potentially unflattering ways.

Conversely, there are moments when I am pleasantly surprised by certain pictures that remind me of my progress. Recently, my professional life has become increasingly busy. The challenge to main my gradual weight loss journey is intense. There are way more things demanding my time, which adds pressure to this journey.

Each meal, each opportunity for exercise is crucial. And the psychological battle within is real. My strategy is to pace myself one day at a time. I will embrace the weight loss and believe in myself to find a healthy life balance.
