A Sad Realization

The recent weeks have been eye opening for me as I’ve discovered some gradual progress with my muscle growth and body composition. Some of my consistent nutrition and exercise practices are yielding positive dividends. Unfortunately, the results accompany a sad realization that I just can’t eat the way I used to.

I’m coming to terms with life in my 50s when it comes to how I eat, train and sleep. Now, I’m not perfect, but it’s becoming more obvious where I need to be focused and disciplined. When I’ve chosen to do so, the results are there. So, lately I’ve begun to just accept that this is my life going forward.

That doesn’t mean life is completely devoid of fun. For instance, last night I took my wife for ice cream and a stroll to hit 10K steps. My folks were in town, so we had a break with the kids. We shared a large ice cream and walked it off. The key difference is that 5-10 years, we’d have individual ice creams and walk a bit less.

Other significant changes that I’m working on involve the foods that love like pasta. I just can’t eat it the way I used to as it stays in my stomach for days. Pasta isn’t completely off limits, but I significantly reduce how often I eat it and the portion size when I do enjoy it. This is part of my plan to maintain a healthy metabolism.

I can see the gradual progress when I stick to my plan, but it’s a sad realization because it confirms that I just have to shut the door completely on some habits. It’s not possible to eat the way I did in my 20s and 30s, which I enjoyed thoroughly. Those were gluttonous times that can’t be relived without consequences, which aren’t worth it.

So, I’ll keep things going with my exercise routine and improved (but not perfect) nutrition as I can see and feel the results. It doesn’t mean life sucks. Again, it’s just a little bit of a sad realization that life changes.
