Overcoming Health Setbacks: A Personal Journey

Recently I had what should have been a routine cancer screening, but it turned into a literal stomach-churning event. For a few days I went without food while dealing with a nasty bug that kept me in the bathroom. At the tail end of this dumpy experience, I realized that it set me up for my great health reset.

Prior to my stomach woes, my bodyweight stalled around 220-222 pounds. After a few days of fasting and a gut purging, my weight dropped to about 215. It wasn’t just the pound shedding that caught my attention, but the realization that I didn’t have much of an appetite during this process. Albeit, I reduced my workouts to a minimum, but I found myself functioning somewhat OK without eating every 3-6 hours.

I see this period as “my great health reset” because it’s an opportunity to build momentum. Food is obviously essential, but my needs may be changing. Could I change my mind in another week or so? Maybe, but I doubt it. I feel like I have an opportunity to pounce on my stubborn body with consistent, disciplined efforts similar to what I practiced from 2020-2022.

Perhaps I’ll exceed those efforts because of past successes and the setbacks in 2023 and 2024. My “setbacks” are strictly related to unwanted weight gain. I definitely enjoyed life, but at a cost because I didn’t effectively balance my health priorities.

My recent health situation is another opportunity experience life in the low 200s and eventually 190s. This time I won’t be concerned about the opinions – of anyone. This time it’s for me. I’m ready to seize the moment and perhaps exceed my previous best.

After a bit of rest, I’ll hit the ground running tomorrow with more disciplined eating and continued workouts. I do a combination of weights and bodyweight 4-5 times per week. Most importantly, I have a new found confidence regarding my nutrition. Let’s see where I am in a few months…
