As I type this post, I sit four years on from the start of my journey. My health and wellness trek has included countless walks, bike rides, food discoveries and an epiphany of what was possible. I’ve also come across a few speed bumps and ditches along. I’ve learned so much about myself and what it means to be on a health and wellness journey.
For the last half of 2023, I enjoyed my life to the fullest with my weight jumping as a consequence. Since the end of summer, I’ve been stuck between 205-210 pounds. I liked being under 200 pounds. However, I’ve questioned the need to focus so intensely on fitness.
There was an inner confidence that I could stop the slide (or bulge) at any time. Plus, for all my enjoyment, I was careful to not overindulge as my weight plateau was around 210-211. I enjoyed life in moderation, allowing some but not too much weight gain. My regimen still included some exercise for maintenance and greens, fruits, etc. for nutrition. I just pulled back from the intense focus to live a little.
There were weeks that included one glass of red or white per night. It was wonderful. The holidays were blissful. Life wasn’t perfect, though, as I dealt with some professional struggles. I took advantage of the opportunity to just live and embrace the moment with family and friends. My mirror and scale checks included a mixture of dread and glee. I certainly don’t want to go back to being 250 pounds, but I didn’t mind the little slump I was in.
What I’ve learned is that my health and wellness journey is embedded within me. My inner self would only allow so much veering from the path as being healthy was now a deeply held value. The journey has changed me in this way. I also learned that it’s okay to question where I am from time to time. It’s okay that I don’t have it all figured out.
I feel it’s okay to occasionally ask myself, “why do I continue to do this?” I also learned that it’s possible to find a balance between life and one’s commitment to personal wellness. I don’t want to lose my momentum, but I also want to make sure I cherish this time as my kids grow up (quickly!). I’m learning each day that finding a balance in life is healthy for me.
As for my weight, I’m trending down towards 205. I’m not in a hurry but am refocusing with my routine and nutrition. I’m excited to see my results later this year. I have little doubt that I’ll return to a sub-200 weight. It’ll be interesting to see how my body composition evolves. To that point, I’ve learned to enjoy the process, enjoy the journey.
