New Strength, New Challenges

As I continue to see gradual gains, I also discover new challenges to my attention, my patience and my capacity for self-discipline. The subtle, but noticeable changes in my body composition and overall strength are accompanied by an occasional uncomfortable surprise at home, work or wherever. It’s as if this new strength brings new challenges.

Those new challenges can, if not careful, throw me off my game. Professionally, these are uncertain times for many, so I definitely feel the pressure to keep solid footing in my craft. Sometimes, though, stuff happens and it can bring about some angst, which opens the door to seeking out immediate sources of comfort, i.e. food. This is definitely an upfront challenge that requires deliberate choices like water over soda or packed fruit over chips/pretzel. I’m not perfect, but my head is in the game.

The other day, I left work feeling anxious about some upcoming deadlines and was tempted to hit a few takeout options along the way. I hadn’t yet had breakfast or lunch so I was primed to have a hearty meal. It came down to a choice and I opted to go with a pack of cooked chicken breast and seeded bread to take home for multiple meals. It turned out to be both a healthier and cheaper option.

My strength has definitely increased. I’ve pushed myself with bodyweight exercises (pull ups, push ups) and dumbbell workouts. Coupled with more consistent eating, I’m beginning to see the physical growth. There’s also the mental growth, which is perhaps more crucial. I’ve embraced the notion that new strength brings new challenges.

I have a healthy level of fear and respect for new challenges. I’m not running towards discomfort, but stubbornly coming to terms with its necessity. The most difficult part is the daily negotiations within. I’m ready to wrestle for however long it takes.
