It Comes Down to the Mind

In some of my previous posts, I used terms like “optimal health” or “wellness” to describe my journey as something beyond weight loss. Perhaps a better approach is to see this path as 99% mental, which can be emotional, psychological and/or metaphysical, which can affect everything. What I choose to eat, drink and do comes down to the mind.

It’s both a complex and simple concept. I’ve found that any imbalance in my emotional or psychological state induce stress, making it tougher to choose wisely. This is where the metaphysical can come into play, if one believes in such things. I do, but it’s sometimes a little complicated for me, which can further induce stress.

Over the years, I’ve learned that it comes down to my state of mind. And what I choose to do in a given moment, regardless of my mood. I’ve grown in some areas such as with random snacking or eating takeout. For instance, last weekend I enjoyed a late evening workout, then decided to get some fried whiting at a seafood joint. There were lots of other decadent items on the menu, some of which created nostalgia of what I used to eat.

I have to consistently remind myself that I have goals to achieve. Some conversations are far more difficult than others as some of my goals remain unmet. However, progress on my fitness goals is live and constant. As I age, I realize that this journey is not possible without the mind, the heart and the soul.
