Finding Fitness in Dark Places

Lately, it’s been a struggle to express my thoughts on the recent stages of my gradual fitness journey. At times, I’ve battled feelings of apathy, frustration and disillusionment. Through these challenges, I feel that I’m finding fitness in dark places.

I’ve been reflecting on the term “fitness” and how it’s often associated with being physically fit, which is awesome. However, I’m learning that fitness has a comprehensive meaning far beyond physical appearance. I believe other important elements of fitness include mental, emotional and metaphysical attributes.

What good are my muscles, if they mask a fragile mind or volatile emotional state? Without a connection to something beyond this world, that challenges my sense of self, the journey seems devoid of purpose. I believe there’s a reason for everything.

Admittedly, I’m not very quick to publicly lean on this philosophy, but it’s what I believe. There’s a Divine One or Creator who I think wishes for humans to be holistically fit. However, this wellness or fitness must be pursued. It won’t just plop in our laps. And the pursuit offers far more value than the achievement.

So, I write this post as a means to support you, dear reader, as I encourage myself to keep going. The dreary, discouraging moments are unfortunately part of the sojourn. Just as the seasons bring sun, wind, rain and snow, the journey will have bright and dark moments.

A key for me has been to keep finding fitness in dark places. Sometimes, it requires a tweak in my thinking about certain situations or just a mental note that every step counts. Most important is to keep one’s heading and move forward into the uncertainty with the right foundation to pursue holistic fitness.
